Dental students are involved in a diverse range of community based projects such as a homeless refuge, a project that supports vulnerable teenage parents, community anchor organisations and the Public Health Development Unit.

  • Reducing mouth trauma; in partnership with Plymouth Albion Rugby Club students have devised a project which will result in players acting as 'ambassadors' to encourage young people to wear mouth guards during contact sports.
  • Oral Health Information; working with youth clubs, schools, young parents groups etc students have been investigating and discovering the most effective methods of communicating with children and young people.

Working in groups; students have devised innovative methods of engaging with children and their families for example:

  • Fluoride Varnish Programme; working with a Childrens Centre over 30 children received treatment with help, advice and support for families.
  • Fisure Sealant Programme; children from a primary school were invited to take part and receive treatment at the Dental Education Facility in Devonport.

The Community Development Team (CDT) has established effective networks and partnerships with a variety of organisations to raise the profile of the College across Plymouth. Using interesting and imaginative methods to involve and engage local residents, the CDT are able to encourage and support people to access treatment via the Dental Education Facility in Devonport.

With a wealth of experience in effective community liaison and engagement, the CDT help to ensure that the College have an effective insight into the local community and are able to respond quickly and flexibly. Working alongside community health based colleagues, the CDT ensure that oral health is part of the 'general health and well being' agenda that is delivered on a local level. This adds depth and interest for the Special Study Unit element of the curriculum which the CDT supports.

The CDT is currently funded by Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership as part of the New Deal for Communities. This funding will cease in December 2010; the CDT are currently seeking continuation funding to ensure this valuable work is developed and expanded into other areas which suffer from health inequalities.
